Women with breast cancer can cut their risk of dying by 30% by taking multivitamins

Women with breast cancer are more likely to survive if they take multivitamin and mineral supplements.  Researchers from the Yeshiva University in New York have found that women, whose breast cancer has become invasive, reduce their chances of dying from the cancer by around 30 per cent. 

The supplements seem to have a protective effect in postmenopausal women whose breast cancer has entered into the breast tissue.

They found that women who take multivitamin and mineral supplements at least once a week are 30 per cent less likely to die from the cancer than women who don’t take any supplements.  

The researchers made the discovery when they analysed data from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), including the 7,728 women who were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Around 38 per cent of the women were taking a multivitamin, and most of these had been taking them before breast cancer had been detected.

New research shows statins do more harm than good

Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs could be doing more harm than good, and should be abandoned as the primary therapy for heart disease prevention, a major review by researchers at University College Hospital in Galway has concluded.

Instead, Coenzyme Q10, an antioxidant, was found to be more effective at controlling cholesterol and preventing heart disease, which has fewer, or no side effects and is available from most health food stores.

Statins dramatically increase the risk of diabetes and cataracts in younger patients, and cancer and neuro-degenerative diseases in the elderly. And the researchers say that the benefits don’t outweigh the risks. Even for patients with advanced heart disease, the drugs may extend life by just a further nine months at best if the drug is taken for 30 years.

Analysing previous studies on statins, the researchers discovered that some had never been published because the results were so alarming, while others had obscured the real risks. One study, the Illuminate trial, was shelved after researchers discovered the statin drug increased the risk of cancer and sudden death. Unfortunately, this latest research is unlikely to be heard in the mainstream media because the statin market is worth £20bn a year and rising.

Statins Can Undo the Benefits of Exercise

Exercise is a foundational strategy to naturally maintain healthy cholesterol levels and optimize your heart health. However, research now shows that if you take a statin drug, you’re likely to forfeit any and all health benefits of your exercise.

Volunteers taking a statin improved their fitness by just 1.5 percent, and some had reduced aerobic capacity at the end of a 12-week fitness program. Mitochondrial content activity also decreased by an average of 4.5 percent.

In comparison, unmedicated volunteers improved their aerobic fitness by more than 10 percent after the 12-week fitness program, and their mitochondrial content activity increased by 13 percent.

Statin drugs, which millions are taking as a form of “preventive medicine” to protect their heart health, can have detrimental effects on your heart.

Why Organic Fruits and Vegetables are Better for You

Organic fruit and vegetables have often been claimed to be much better for you than those grown conventionally with chemicals, and scientists have finally been able to explain why.

Organic produce is not grown with nitrogenous fertilisers, which means they have to activate their own defence systems which, in turn, increases their levels of antioxidants.

For example, tomatoes that are grown organically have higher levels of phenolic compounds than conventionally grown ones.  These are antioxidants that protect against both cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, but even some cancers, .

Altogether, the researchers from the University of Barcelona found 34 different phenolic compounds in the organic tomatoes they analysed.

They also believe that the greater the stress a plant experiences in the course of protecting itself against pests and disease, the more polyphenols they produce.  Plants protected by chemicals such as insecticides don’t suffer the same stress levels and therefore don’t produce more of the health-giving antioxidants.

Teeth plaque could be causing cancer

If you have lots of plaque on your teeth, you could be at greater risk of developing cancer, according to researchers who have found a direct link between oral hygiene and the disease.

People with the highest amount of plaque were nearly twice as likely to have cancer.  In women, it was most likely to be breast cancer.

Researchers from Helsinki University found a direct correlation between amounts of plaque and cancer risk when they looked at oral hygiene and cancer rates in 1,390 people.

One of the best ways to improve dental hygiene in addition to brushing and flossing is a practice called oil pulling.  This involves swishing 10mls of oil, such as sunflower oil, around the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes first thing in the morning before eating or drinking.  The oil should be spat out after this time as it will be full of bacteria and other pathogens that have accumulated during the night.  The website, gives more details.

Antibacterial agent, Triclosan, in common household products shown to weaken the heart and muscles

Found in a variety of soaps, hand sanitizers, fabrics, toothpastes, mouthwashes and even tap water, researchers have discovered triclosan is far from harmless. Linked to heart failure and decline in muscle strength, the agent has come under scrutiny due to its widespread use in common household products. Considering the Environmental Protection Agency estimates over one million pounds of the chemical are produced each year in the United States, such excessive daily exposure has researchers worried – and for good reason.

Increasingly detected in human blood plasma, urine and breast milk, triclosan is setting off alarms in the scientific community. A study at the University of Davis in California showed that the chemical impairs the excitation-contraction coupling mechanism in mice, thereby hindering the heart’s capacity to circulate blood. Limb muscle strength was seriously compromised as well. The researchers exposed the animals to the equivalent level of triclosan as a person is exposed to each day from household products. The first mouse died within a minute of heart failure. The scientists then lowered the dosage and found the chemical decreased heart function by 25 percent within 20 minutes. Limb strength was reduced by 18 percent for 60 minutes after the agent was administered. Dr. Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, the study’s co-author and professor of cardiovascular medicine, said in a press release, “The effects of triclosan on cardiac function were really dramatic … Although triclosan is not regulated as a drug, this compound acts like a potent cardiac depressant in our models.”

Despite the fact that it’s a leap from animal trials to humans, researchers suspect triclosan may have serious ramifications for people as well. Michelle Castillo, author of the ABC News article, “Antibacterial agent Triclosan shown to hinder muscle movement in mice, fish,” notes:

“Triclosan binds to blood proteins and is easily expelled through urine or other body processes, which is why it typically considered to be harmless to humans. However, for people who do not metabolize the agent quickly, it can remain in the blood for quite some time. Also, some of the experiments the researchers conducted was done with blood proteins available, and even though the triclosan was binding to them, it still disrupted the muscle activity. However, most concerning is the fact that people with heart conditions may be more affected by exposure because of their weakened muscle state.”

Taking into account the sheer levels an average person is exposed to on a daily basis, scientists are correct to be concerned. Isaac Pessah, principle investigator of the study, warns, “These findings provide strong evidence that the chemical is of concern to both human and environmental health … We have shown that triclosan potently impairs muscle functions by interfering with signaling between two proteins that are of fundamental importance to life. Regulatory agencies should definitely be reconsidering whether it should be allowed in consumer products.”
